This article provides a workaround to an issue in which a printer drive cannot be installed from Windows Update in Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019.

Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
- You install a printer by using the Add a printer using the TCP/IP address or hostname option in the Add Printer Wizard.
- On the Type a printer hostname or IP address page, you select TCP/IP device as the Device type, and then you enter the hostname or IP address for the printer.
- You select the Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use check box.
In this scenario, the printer driver that is provided through Windows Update does not install automatically. Instead, one of the following actions occurs:
- You are prompted to use an inbox Class Driver.
- If no inbox Class Driver exists, you are prompted to select the driver to be used.
Cause
Windows searches for driver .inf files through Windows Update only for printers that are installed by using a USB or WSD (Web Services Device) connection. Windows searches in the local INF folder only for printers that are installed as a TCP/IP device.
Workaround
On the Printer Driver Selection page, click the Windows Update button to download the list of drivers that are available on Windows Update, and then select the make and model of your printer.
More Information
For enterprises that use the TCP/IP device option, the desired drivers can be stored on a network location, and that location can be appended to the DevicePath value. To do this, follow these steps:
- In Registry Editor, locate the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionDevicePath - Update the subkey to add value data for the local path for the driver installation.
For example, change the value data from the default entry (%systemroot%inf) to the following path:
%systemroot%inf;serverDriverShare
In addition, the .inf file must have an entry that lists only the HWID of the printer. For example:
You must contact the printer manufacturer for an updated driver that has an updated .inf file. After you obtain and store the correct file, the Add Printer Wizard can preselect the driver that is associated with the printer's HWID.

Symptoms
On a computer that is running Windows 10, version 1803, Windows Server, version 1803 or a later version of Windows, you do the following operations:
Select Start, type Control Panel, and then press Enter.
In Control Panel, select the View Devices and Printers item.
Select Add Printer at the top of the window.
After the wizard started, select The printer that I want isn't listed.
Select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings, and then select Next.
On the Choose a Printer Port page, select the desired port, and then select Next.
On the Install the printer driver page, select Windows Update.
The updated Printers list is displayed from Windows Update. For example, if you select KONICA MINOLTA under Manufacturer, the Printers list is displayed as follows.
In this scenario, not all registered drivers are displayed.
For example, 'KONICA MINOLTA PS BW Laser Class Driver' and 'KONICA MINOLTA PS Color Laser Class Driver' are not both displayed as expected.
Workaround
To work around this issue, manually download and install the printer driver to be installed from the Windows Update Catalog. In the example of the driver mentioned in the Symptoms section, install according to the following procedure.

Go to the Windows Update Catalog.
In the search box, enter the keyword of the driver to be downloaded, such as 'Windows 10 KONICA MINOLTA PS BW Laser Class Driver,' and then select Search.
After the list is displayed, select the Download button for the target driver, and save it to any folder.
Extract the saved .cab file to any folder.
Do steps 1 through 6 in the Symptoms section.
On the Install the printer driver screen, select Have disk.
Browse to the folder that was extracted in step 4, and then select the OK.
After the printer driver list appears, select the target driver, and then select Next to go through the remaining wizard steps and complete all installation tasks. Contact your printer vendor for more information about which printer driver must be downloaded for the printer that you are using.
